Aave Expands to Aptos, Marking First Non-EVM Deployment in $20B DeFi Push

Aave Launches on Aptos Blockchain After Unanimous Governance Vote, Opening New Chapter in Non-EVM DeFi Expansion

In a bold strategic move that could reshape the future of cross-chain decentralized finance (DeFi), Aave, one of the industry’s largest and most respected lending protocols, is officially expanding to the Aptos blockchain—its first-ever deployment on a non-Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) network. The milestone comes after a governance proposal received unanimous community support, with over 393,000 AAVE tokens voting in favor of the integration and zero opposition.

The development was revealed by Aave founder Stani Kulechov in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, confirming that the DeFi giant—which boasts over $20 billion in Total Value Locked (TVL) across more than a dozen chains—is embracing Aptos's unique architecture and its Move programming language, originally developed by Meta.

“Bringing the Aptos market under (the Aave) DAO will leverage Aptos’s high throughput, low transaction fees, and the Move programming language’s security features to enhance Aave’s protocol performance and broaden its user base,” the proposal stated.

What This Means for Aave and Aptos

The integration represents a critical turning point in Aave's long-term vision outlined in its Aave 2030 roadmap, which seeks to expand the protocol’s reach beyond Ethereum and EVM-compatible environments. By launching on Aptos, Aave is signaling its commitment to embracing high-performance Layer-1 alternatives that offer faster transaction speeds, lower fees, and greater scalability—attributes that are increasingly vital as DeFi continues to evolve.

Key Benefits of Aptos Integration:

  • Non-EVM Compatibility: Aave’s launch on Aptos will test its interoperability capabilities and flexibility beyond the Ethereum ecosystem.

  • High Throughput and Low Fees: Aptos boasts sub-second finality and a parallel transaction execution model, allowing for significantly lower latency and transaction costs.

  • Security Through Move: The Move programming language provides strong static analysis and modularity, aiming to reduce vulnerabilities in smart contracts—especially crucial for a DeFi protocol managing billions in TVL.

Deployment and Supported Assets

The Aave V3 version on Aptos has already been successfully deployed to testnet, utilizing code written in Move. According to the governance proposal and integration roadmap, the initial asset support on Aptos will include:

  • Aptos (APT) — the native token of the Aptos blockchain

  • USD Coin (USDC)

  • Tether (USDT)

  • Ethena Staked Dollar (sUSDe)

The deployment was managed by Aave Labs, the core development team, which is executing on its vision of multichain protocol resilience and growth. The move aligns with Aave’s objective of becoming a protocol-agnostic DeFi infrastructure, capable of functioning across varying virtual machines and consensus architectures.

Aptos Ecosystem: A Growing Force in DeFi

Launched in 2022 by Aptos Labs, Aptos is positioning itself as a next-generation Layer-1 blockchain built for speed, scalability, and security. Backed by heavyweight investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Apollo Global Management, and Franklin Templeton, the project has raised $400 million to date and is currently ranked as the 12th-largest blockchain by TVL, with $970 million locked across its ecosystem, according to DefiLlama.

The Aave integration could act as a catalyst for Aptos adoption, as it introduces one of DeFi’s most trusted and battle-tested protocols to a new user base.

“This integration brings massive composability potential to Aptos and could attract more DeFi liquidity and development talent to the network,” said one analyst.

Community Cautiously Optimistic Amid Technical Risks

Despite the overwhelmingly positive vote, the Aave community has voiced some caution. As this is the first non-EVM deployment in Aave’s history, concerns have emerged around the security implications of operating in a new environment with unfamiliar tooling and programming languages.

An X user known as 0xobsessed expressed concerns:

“This is a historic move, but it carries risk. A bug or exploit on Aptos—even if isolated—could damage Aave’s reputation across all chains. Let’s hope the security audits are rock solid.”

Indeed, Aptos’s Move language is still relatively new within DeFi circles, and its differences from Solidity (used in EVM chains) means auditing practices, tooling, and dev familiarity are less mature. However, proponents argue that Move’s formal verification features may ultimately offer stronger safeguards against common DeFi exploits.

Aave 2030 Vision: Beyond Ethereum

The Aptos deployment is a significant milestone in the Aave 2030 roadmap, which aims to build Aave into a multichain liquidity layer powering the next wave of DeFi applications, Web3 wallets, and institutional finance.

Previous expansions have included:

  • Polygon, Avalanche, Optimism, and Arbitrum

  • Base (Coinbase’s L2) and Metis

  • Plans for zkEVM and L3 deployments

Now, with Aptos onboard, Aave demonstrates its commitment to innovation, even if it means venturing outside the comfort zone of EVM chains.

“DeFi’s next frontier isn’t just more of the same—it’s about real performance, real scalability, and breaking old assumptions,” said an Aave contributor. “Aptos is our first step in proving that Aave can thrive anywhere.”

What’s Next?

Following the testnet deployment, Aave Labs will likely proceed with:

  1. Mainnet launch, contingent on successful audits and stress testing.

  2. Progressive rollout of additional assets and risk parameters.

  3. Community engagement to educate developers about Move-based Aave deployment opportunities.

  4. Liquidity mining or incentive programs to attract initial usage on Aptos.

For Aptos, this represents a strategic win that adds DeFi credibility to its growing ecosystem. For Aave, it’s a chance to prove that it can remain dominant in an evolving multichain future.

Conclusion: A Historic Move Into Non-EVM DeFi

The successful Aave governance vote to integrate with Aptos is more than just another deployment—it’s a watershed moment for decentralized finance. By embracing a non-EVM blockchain, Aave is testing the boundaries of interoperability, security, and decentralized governance.

While the move carries inherent technical risks, it also opens the door to greater scalability, new user demographics, and broader protocol resilience. The crypto community will be watching closely as Aave V3 transitions from testnet to mainnet on Aptos—potentially paving the way for future multichain DeFi innovation.
