Algorand has surpassed 500,000 post-quantum signed transactions on its mainnet, combining four years of State Proofs secured by the lattice-based Falcon scheme with the recent launch of native Falcon-1024 accounts. The milestone positions the layer-1 network as one of the few major blockchains with working quantum-resistant infrastructure already in production rather than still on a roadmap.

Algorand has recorded more than 500,000 post-quantum signed transactions on its mainnet, a milestone that spans two distinct phases of the network's quantum-resilience strategy. The count includes State Proofs, compact cryptographic certificates that attest to ledger state changes every 256 rounds and have been signed using the Falcon scheme since the 2022 Renaissance upgrade, as well as transactions originating from native post-quantum accounts that went live on August 22 through the v5.0.0 protocol upgrade. The achievement places Algorand well ahead of most competing layer-1 networks, many of which are still in the planning stages for quantum migration.

State Proofs: Four Years of Quantum-Secure History

Algorand's post-quantum journey began in August 2022 with the deployment of State Proofs, a mechanism that creates a quantum-resistant snapshot of the ledger state every 256 rounds. These proofs are signed using Falcon, a lattice-based signature scheme selected by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for post-quantum standardization. The State Proofs anchor the chain's entire historical record back to genesis with quantum-resilient signatures, protecting the integrity of the ledger against future quantum attacks.

The significance of this early deployment became clear as the quantum computing threat moved from theoretical concern to practical consideration. While much of the blockchain industry scrambled to respond to emerging quantum threats, Algorand had already been building for this moment for years. The network's cryptographic agility, the ability to swap underlying primitives without a full rebuild, has given it more room to close remaining gaps than most other chains possess. The State Proofs continue to accumulate every 256 rounds, providing a continuous quantum-secure attestation of the ledger's integrity.

Native Falcon-1024 Accounts: The v5.0.0 Milestone

The second phase of Algorand's post-quantum strategy arrived with the v5.0.0 upgrade, which went live on mainnet on August 22, 2026. The upgrade introduced native support for Falcon-1024 post-quantum signature accounts, eliminating the need for the LogicSig wrapper that was previously required. Users can now create accounts protected by quantum-resilient signatures directly within the protocol, with support available in the Pera wallet and all SDKs. The upgrade represents the first deliverable from the post-quantum roadmap the Algorand Foundation published in June 2026, which commits to achieving broad quantum resilience by the end of 2027.

The upgrade also introduced a usage-based fee model that charges based on the resources a transaction actually consumes. Quantum-resilient signatures are cheaper to verify than standard signatures but take up significantly more space in a block, with Falcon signatures being approximately 10 times larger than Ed25519's 64-byte signatures. The fee model prices this difference fairly, enabling native support for quantum-resilient accounts without subsidizing the additional block space. The v5.0.0 upgrade represents the first deliverable from the post-quantum roadmap the Algorand Foundation published in June 2026. The roadmap commits to achieving broad quantum resilience by the end of 2027, well before the deprecation of legacy RSA key sizes and ahead of the target timeline for national security systems. Later in 2026, the Foundation will introduce post-quantum multi-signatures and begin migrating its own treasury to post-quantum accounts, demonstrating confidence in the infrastructure by putting its own assets at risk. Stakers will also be able to stake from post-quantum accounts, extending quantum protection to the network's consensus participants.

By early 2027, subject to positive results from ongoing analysis, the network plans to present research on a post-quantum Verifiable Random Function and introduce quantum-resistant consensus components. A hybrid model is being considered for consensus messages, where Ed25519 and Falcon signatures would be used in combination to provide both performance and quantum resistance. The roadmap's timeline reflects an understanding that achieving full quantum resilience requires not just upgrading user accounts but also securing the underlying protocol machinery that keeps the network running.

Gaps Remain—But Algorand Holds a Defensible Lead

Despite the significant progress, important gaps remain at the consensus layer. Block proposals, committee voting, and validator selection still rely on classical cryptography, meaning that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically disrupt the network's operation even if user accounts are protected. The Algorand Foundation has acknowledged these gaps and indicated that consensus-layer upgrades are next on the list, with cryptographic agility providing more room to close them than most other chains possess. The network is considered to hold a defensible lead rather than having completed the quantum transition, but that lead is substantial compared to the broader industry.

The total of more than 500,000 post-quantum signed transactions continues to grow as both State Proofs accumulate every 256 rounds and users create native Falcon-1024 accounts. The first fully Falcon-signed transaction on mainnet was completed in late 2025, and by early 2026, over 140,000 quantum-resistant transactions had already been recorded. The v5.0.0 upgrade has accelerated that count significantly, with adoption of native Falcon-1024 accounts growing as users and developers recognize the importance of quantum-resistant infrastructure. The network's approach to quantum resilience, combining early deployment, cryptographic agility, and a clear roadmap, provides a model for how blockchain infrastructure can prepare for the quantum era without sacrificing performance or usability. The upcoming roadmap milestones, including multisig support, treasury migration, and consensus-level upgrades, will determine whether Algorand can maintain its lead and achieve the comprehensive quantum resilience it has targeted for the end of 2027.
