Altcoin Market Struggles Amid Trader Focus on Short-Term Gains

The altcoin market is grappling with stagnation, as many traders focus on short-term trading strategies rather than long-term value. This trend, according to Daniel Cheung, co-founder of Syncracy Capital, is driving heightened volatility and limiting the potential for significant altcoin rallies.

Cheung explained on December 28 that this behavioral shift reflects a preference for high-frequency trading, with participants seeking optimal entries and exits. The broader impact of this shift is evident in the TOTAL3 market cap, which represents the total cryptocurrency market capitalization excluding Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). Currently at $965.15 billion, TOTAL3 has seen a 92.13% rise year-to-date but remains 16% below its 2021 peak of $1.13 trillion.

Critical Market Zones and Trader Sentiment

The altcoin market is caught in a tight range, with $840 billion to $1.1 trillion identified as a critical zone by pseudonymous trader Daan Crypto Trades. In a December 28 post on X (formerly Twitter), Daan noted that this range is likely to produce choppy market behavior. A drop below $800 billion, he warned, could trigger increased caution among traders.

The elusive "euphoria phase" — characterized by strong rallies and price discovery — has yet to materialize. For altcoins to reach this phase, analysts agree that breaking past the 2021 high of $1.13 trillion is essential.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin dominance has surged to nearly 60%, reflecting its relative stability compared to altcoins. However, this has prompted some traders to view altcoins as offering better risk-reward (R/R) profiles.

“Altcoins, at this juncture, offer a far more optimal R/R profile than Bitcoin,” stated pseudonymous trader Dyme on December 27. He further suggested that Bitcoin’s accumulation phase might be over for the next 1.5 years, urging a strategic pivot to altcoins.

Despite overall market sluggishness, some altcoins have posted impressive weekly gains. According to CoinMarketCap, notable performers include:

“Everyone decided they were George Soros all of a sudden this cycle,” Cheung remarked, referencing the famed investor’s high-frequency trading methods.

Roadblocks to Altcoin Growth

While some altcoins are showing promise, the broader market cap continues to struggle. Analysts highlight several key challenges:

Market Cap Ceiling: The $1.13 trillion threshold must be breached to initiate a price discovery phase and broader altcoin growth.
Short-Term Focus: The reliance on hourly charts and leverage has shifted sentiment away from the long-term holding mentality seen in previous bull markets.
Bitcoin Season: According to the Altcoin Season Index, which tracks the performance of the top 100 cryptocurrencies (excluding stablecoins), the market remains in Bitcoin Season. A December 29 score of 45 reflects Bitcoin’s dominance over altcoins.

Altcoin Season is typically declared when 75% of the top 100 cryptocurrencies outperform Bitcoin over a 90-day period. While the current score hints at growing altcoin momentum, Bitcoin’s market influence remains strong.

Outlook for 2025

Looking ahead, traders are cautiously optimistic about the altcoin market. However, sustained growth will likely depend on breaking through key resistance levels and fostering a shift in sentiment toward long-term value over short-term gains.

For now, the market remains in a holding pattern, with Bitcoin dominance setting the tone. Altcoins may have the potential for breakout rallies, but broader market conditions and trader behavior will play critical roles in shaping their trajectory in 2025.
