FTX Begins Repaying Bahamas Creditors: Bitcoin Cap Sparks Controversy

FTX Set to Begin Repaying Bahamas-Based Creditors Amid Disparity in Bitcoin and Ethereum Payouts

FTX’s long-awaited creditor repayment process is set to begin on February 18, 2025, with a focus on Bahamas-based creditors, marking a significant chapter in the aftermath of the exchange’s 2022 collapse. The repayment structure has created waves in the crypto community, as Ethereum holders will receive $2,500 per ETH, while Bitcoin claims are capped at $20,000 per BTC, based on the market prices from November 2022. This has sparked frustration, particularly among Bitcoin investors, as the current price of Bitcoin has surged far beyond the repayment cap.

The Disparity Between Market Value and Repayment Amounts

The repayment process, while providing some relief, has generated significant frustration for many investors. As Bitcoin now trades at approximately $97,988, the $20,000 cap leaves a huge gap between the current market value and the repayment amount. Ethereum holders, in contrast, have been dealt a somewhat lighter blow, with the current price of Ethereum standing at $2,698, a smaller gap from the $2,500 repayment.

This difference has led to heated discussions among the crypto community about the fairness of the repayment structure. Many argue that it doesn’t adequately reflect the current market prices, leaving creditors shortchanged, especially Bitcoin holders who expected more in line with Bitcoin's skyrocketing value.

Analyst Insights: What’s Behind FTX’s Plan?

Despite the investor dissatisfaction, crypto analyst @Ren_gmi offered a more detailed perspective on FTX’s repayment strategy. According to the analyst, FTX is expected to return between $14.7 billion and $16.5 billion to creditors, which represents a repayment rate of over 118% of the original account values from November 2022. While this seems like a generous payout on the surface, the reality is that less than $3 billion is expected to actually make its way back into the crypto market.

The recovery has been driven by the sale of bankruptcy claims, which were initially worth as little as 5 cents on the dollar. As more assets were recovered, including gains from FTX’s VC investments in projects like Anthropic, Sui, and the Solana (SOL) rally, the value of these claims surged, allowing for higher-than-expected payouts. Still, the return will likely be in fiat or a mix of assets, not necessarily crypto, meaning creditors may face losses in terms of the actual coins they originally held.

PlanB Poll: A Preference for Bitcoin

In light of these developments, PlanB conducted a poll asking his followers whether they would hold the cash from the repayment or buy Bitcoin. The results showed a resounding preference for Bitcoin, with over 70% of respondents opting to reinvest their repayments into BTC. This suggests a strong confidence in Bitcoin's long-term potential, even amid short-term fluctuations in the market.

WLFI Price Outlook: Wallet Freeze Sparks Controversy

While many are frustrated by the repayment caps, especially for Bitcoin holders, the poll results highlight a belief that Bitcoin remains a safe haven asset in the eyes of many crypto investors. This sentiment is a testament to Bitcoin’s resilience and status as the flagship digital asset, despite market volatility and regulatory uncertainty.

Bitcoin vs. Ethereum: Which Asset Gets the Better Deal?

The main point of contention remains the difference in the repayment amounts for Bitcoin and Ethereum holders. Given Bitcoin's explosive growth since 2022, many BTC investors feel the $20,000 cap is too low, especially considering the coin’s price has skyrocketed past the cap. On the other hand, Ethereum’s price has shown a smaller gap from the repayment amount, which seems to have lessened the frustration among ETH holders.

The disparity between the two assets' repayment structures has sparked debates on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where users have argued that repayments should reflect current market values. Many believe that revising the caps to match the current prices of both Bitcoin and Ethereum would be a fairer approach to the repayment process.

A Critical Step in Closing the FTX Collapse Chapter

Despite the controversies surrounding the repayment structure, this marks a critical step in FTX’s bankruptcy resolution. For many creditors, receiving any repayment at all is a welcome outcome after the exchange’s catastrophic collapse. However, the frustration with the repayment amounts reflects ongoing concerns about the fairness of the process and whether FTX could have done more to ensure a more equitable distribution of its recovered assets.

As FTX moves forward with the repayment process, the crypto community will be closely monitoring how the company handles the remaining claims and whether any revisions to the structure could be made to better reflect current market conditions. For now, Bitcoin investors, in particular, are left grappling with the reality of the $20,000 cap, while Ethereum holders may find some relief in the smaller difference between repayment amounts and current market prices.

The repayment process may be a step towards finalizing FTX’s chapter in the crypto saga, but for many creditors, the debate over fairness and market value will likely continue to simmer.
