Solana Community Split Over Proposal to Slash Inflation from 4.5% to 1.5%—Impact on SOL & DeFi Yields

Solana Community Divided as New Inflation-Reduction Proposal Targets 1.5% Emissions

Solana’s latest inflation-reduction proposal has sparked a heated debate within the ecosystem, as community members weigh the long-term benefits against the short-term impact on DeFi yields. The plan seeks to aggressively reduce Solana’s annual inflation rate from 4.5% to 1.5% over the next three years — a significant shift that could reshape staking incentives and overall network economics.

What Is the Proposal’s Target?

The new proposal, known as the “Double Disinflation Rate” or SIMD-0411, aims to cut Solana’s current inflation rate from 4.5% → 1.5% by doubling the network’s annual disinflation rate from 15% → 30%.

Under the existing 15% reduction schedule, Solana’s inflation would gradually drop to around 2.5% in three years. However, the newly suggested model accelerates this timeline, potentially easing long-term selling pressure much faster.

What Could the Impact Be on Solana?

While the plan is intended to strengthen Solana’s long-term economic structure, analysts warn of near-term challenges.

Short-Term: Lower Yields for DeFi Users

Crypto analyst DeFi Ignas voiced concerns that reducing emissions could immediately hurt returns on Solana’s DeFi platforms — especially liquid staking tokens (LSTs) such as jupSOL.

According to Ignas:

“If rates drop, I would reconsider holding that position and even SOL itself. Although I admit, lower inflation is the correct decision for long term and save $SOL chart.”

Lower emissions mean fewer staking rewards, which directly affects APY offered by LSTs and validators. This could temporarily make Solana’s DeFi ecosystem less attractive to yield-seeking users.

Long-Term: Reduced Selling Pressure

Mert Mumtaz, CEO of Helius Labs, supports the proposal and argues it will significantly reduce forced selling from stakers who regularly offload rewards to pay taxes.

He called the proposal an effort to “plug the leaky bucket”, suggesting the network could save millions by cutting unnecessary emissions.

How Much Supply Reduction Is Expected?

According to SIMD-0411, Solana could remove 22.3 million SOL from its inflation schedule over the next six years — worth $2.9 billion at current prices.

This reduction would substantially ease long-term sell-side pressure, creating a more sustainable token economy.

A History of Inflation Debates

Solana’s inflation model has been a recurring topic of contention. Earlier in 2024, proposal SIMD-228 attempted to slash inflation by a massive 80%, but it was rejected due to concerns over its impact on staking rewards.

By contrast, SIMD-0411 is viewed as a more balanced approach — though challenges remain.

Community Remains Split

Although many see the proposal as a strategic long-term improvement, others worry it could weaken staking incentives just as competition among L1 ecosystems intensifies.

The community vote will ultimately determine whether the new disinflation model is implemented.

Market Outlook for SOL

As of now, SOL trades around $129, down 50% from its September high of $253. With market sentiment already fragile, further reductions in staking yield could affect short-term demand — even if long-term fundamentals strengthen.
