Solana Alpenglow Upgrade Enters Public Testnet With Finality Target of 150 Milliseconds
Solana has moved its Alpenglow upgrade to the public testnet, where developers will test reducing transaction finality from roughly 13 seconds to about 0.15 seconds. The change could let exchanges, bridges, and merchants treat payments as irreversible almost immediately.
Solana's long-anticipated Alpenglow upgrade has reached the public test network, marking a significant step toward cutting the time it takes for a transaction to become irreversible from approximately 13 seconds to roughly 0.15 seconds. Finality is the moment when a payment can no longer be reversed, and it is the threshold that exchanges wait for before crediting deposits, bridges wait for before releasing funds on another blockchain, and merchants rely on to confirm that a payment cannot be taken back. The testnet is a copy of the blockchain that uses tokens with no monetary value, allowing developers to test the migration, identify problems, and restart the network without putting user funds at risk. Order book data across major exchanges shows bid liquidity remains concentrated near recent support levels, while ask orders thin above immediate resistance.
Alpenglow Replaces TowerBFT With Votor Voting Protocol
Solana currently uses a system called TowerBFT to reach consensus, the process through which validators agree on which transactions belong in the permanent record. Validators record their votes on the blockchain and stack enough of them across 32 slots before a block becomes final. Alpenglow replaces that system with a voting protocol called Votor. Validators send votes directly to one another and can settle on a block after one or two rounds, removing the long chain of onchain votes. Applications continue to execute transactions as they do today, and users will not need to change wallets or how they send funds. Perpetual futures funding rates for SOL remain slightly positive, indicating that leveraged traders are paying a premium to maintain long positions.
Testnet Migration Checks Broader Validator Set
Alpenglow has spent more than four months running on a smaller network created specifically for the upgrade. Moving it to Solana's established testnet checks whether the broader group of computers and services already running the blockchain can switch together. Validators taking part need Agave 4.3, the main software used to run Solana, which is maintained by Anza, one of the companies responsible for developing the network. Anza recommended Agave 4.3 to all mainnet validators in late September after first rolling it out to operators responsible for 10% and then 25% of the SOL used to secure the network. Spot volume for SOL has held above the 30-day average during the testnet rollout.
Firedancer and Frankendancer Absent From First Alpenglow Test
Firedancer and Frankendancer, two alternative validator programs built by Jump Crypto, do not yet support the Alpenglow test. Those alternatives are intended to reduce Solana's reliance on a single piece of software, so a fault in Agave does not affect every validator at once. Their absence from the test means the first Alpenglow migration will run entirely through Agave. September 28 appears in Anza's schedule as the tentative date for turning on features included in Agave 4.3 on the main network, though it is not a confirmed Alpenglow launch date, and Anza's tracker still listed the testnet switch itself as pending early Wednesday. Open interest in SOL perpetual contracts has expanded modestly over the past 24 hours, while order book depth within 2% of the mid-price shows balanced participation from market makers.

What Faster Finality Means for Payments and Bridges
The finality improvement carries direct implications for payment processors, cross-chain bridges, and merchants. Exchanges currently wait roughly 13 seconds before crediting deposits, a delay that can frustrate users and slow trading operations. Bridges wait before releasing money on another blockchain, adding friction to cross-chain transfers. Merchants need finality to know that a payment cannot be taken back, and a 0.15-second window would make Solana competitive with centralized payment rails for point-of-sale transactions. The upgrade does not change how users interact with the network, but it alters the risk calculus for service providers who currently price in the possibility of a chain reorganization during the finality window. Volume across spot and derivatives markets has remained elevated, suggesting that market participants are actively positioning around the upgrade timeline.
Timeline and Next Steps
The public testnet phase will determine whether Alpenglow can be safely activated on mainnet without disrupting the broader validator set. Anza's recommendation of Agave 4.3 to all mainnet validators signals that the software is approaching production readiness, but the absence of Firedancer and Frankendancer from the initial test means the first migration will rely entirely on one client implementation. The tentative September 28 date for activating Agave 4.3 features on mainnet is not a confirmed Alpenglow launch, and the testnet switch itself remained pending as of early Wednesday. The coming weeks will reveal whether the broader validator community can coordinate the migration smoothly, with the 0.15-second finality target representing one of the most significant performance improvements in Solana's history if successfully implemented.
