Stellar Stablecoin Transfers Surge 50% as Velocity Hits 23x

Stablecoin Transfers on Stellar Surge 50% in a Month as Supply Contracts and Velocity Jumps

Stellar processed $8.92 billion in stablecoin transfers over the past 30 days, a 50% increase from the previous period, even as the stablecoin supply on the network fell 11.7% to $387.92 million. The smaller float turned over roughly 23 times in a single month, a velocity metric that signals institutional payment rails rather than passive holding.

Stellar's stablecoin ecosystem is quietly undergoing a transformation that sets it apart from most of the crypto industry. While the total stablecoin supply on the network contracted by 11.7% over the past 30 days to $387.92 million, the value moving across those coins surged 50% to $8.92 billion. That divergence—more transfers, fewer coins—points to a network that is being used for actual payments and settlements rather than passive storage. The velocity figure, approximately 23 turnovers of the entire stablecoin float in a single month, places Stellar in a different category from chains where stablecoins largely sit idle in wallets or DeFi protocols, waiting for speculative opportunities rather than facilitating real-world transactions.

Velocity Jumps as Stablecoins Move at Scale

The 30-day transfer volume of $8.92 billion marks a significant acceleration from earlier in the year. In Q2 2026, Stellar recorded $11.4 billion in stablecoin transfer volume, the network's first double-digit-billion quarter for stablecoin movement. The latest 30-day figure suggests the pace is holding steady, with the network consistently processing well above the sub-$4 billion monthly average seen during that record quarter. The velocity metric—how many times a given supply of coins turns over in a period—is one of the more revealing signals, and at roughly 23x, Stellar's stablecoin velocity far exceeds the industry average. This reflects a network where stablecoins are being used to settle real-world transactions rather than sitting as idle balances, a pattern that aligns with institutional payment behavior where funds are held only briefly before being moved to settle obligations.

The network's Q2 metrics showed asset velocity remained near 33x during that quarter, with stablecoin payment volume reaching an all-time high of $5.5 billion in Q1 2026 alone, up 72% year over year. The acceleration in velocity suggests that Stellar's infrastructure is being adopted by payment operators and financial institutions that require rapid settlement and high throughput. The network's transaction finality of 3-5 seconds and near-zero fees make it suited for the kind of high-volume, low-value transfers that characterize institutional settlement and cross-border payments, and the data indicates that these features are driving real usage rather than theoretical adoption.

Holder Count Rises Even as Supply Contracts

Sui Hits $65B Stablecoin Surge via Free Transfers

Despite the shrinking supply, the number of stablecoin holders on Stellar rose 2.8% to approximately 706,000, suggesting that new participants are entering the network even as the total coin supply declines. This is a sign that adoption is broadening rather than consolidating among a smaller group of large holders, and it indicates that the network's stablecoin ecosystem is attracting a diverse range of users. The network's RWA holder count also climbed 3.43% to 19,189 over the same period, indicating that the institutional tokenization side of the ecosystem is expanding in parallel with the stablecoin activity. The growing holder base provides a foundation for continued network growth, as more participants create more opportunities for transactions and settlement activity.

The stablecoin market cap on Stellar had previously climbed 20.25% to $394.88 million across 694,000 holders in late August, and the subsequent 11.7% supply decline suggests that while the total float has shrunk, the remaining coins are being used with far greater intensity. This pattern aligns with institutional payment behavior, where funds are held only briefly before being moved to settle obligations, and it indicates that the stablecoins on Stellar are functioning as working capital rather than long-term stores of value. The combination of falling supply and rising transfer volume creates a virtuous cycle where the coins that remain are used more frequently, increasing the network's utility and attracting additional users.

Institutions Drive the Activity

The surge in transfer volume comes as Stellar continues to attract institutional issuers and payment operators. The network now hosts tokenized real-world assets across approximately 70 products, placing Stellar second only to Ethereum in that category. U.S. Treasury bonds dominate Stellar's RWA ecosystem at 94.8% of total value, led by Franklin Templeton's BENJI token, followed by WisdomTree's tokenized funds, Ondo Finance's USDY, and Mercado Bitcoin's instruments. The concentration of Treasury-backed assets on the network reflects Stellar's appeal to institutional issuers seeking a compliant, high-speed settlement layer for traditional financial instruments.

Much of the acceleration traces back to Protocol 26, dubbed "Yardstick," which went live on Stellar's mainnet on May 6, 2026. The upgrade added a governed on-chain freeze mechanism for compliance and improved 256-bit arithmetic, giving the network the precision needed to settle institutional-grade financial instruments. Since the beginning of 2026, Stellar has crossed the $1 billion, $2 billion, and $3 billion RWA milestones, driven by high-speed institutional adoption. The Q2 2026 report showed tokenized RWAs reached $3.05 billion, doubling in a single quarter—about four times faster than the broader RWA market's 50% growth over the same stretch. The combination of institutional adoption, high velocity, and expanding holder base positions Stellar as a leading network for stablecoin and tokenized asset settlement.

Stablecoin Ecosystem Diversifies

The stablecoin ecosystem on Stellar has also diversified, with USDC supply on the network reaching a market capitalization of $256 million in Q1 2026, up 14.9% quarter over quarter. Ondo's USDY token now adds approximately $530 million to the network's stablecoin and yield-bearing asset mix, while PayPal has also announced that PYUSD will launch on Stellar, adding another major issuer to the network's stablecoin lineup. The diversification of stablecoin issuers reduces reliance on any single provider and increases the network's resilience to issuer-specific risks. The combination of rising transfer volume, falling supply, and expanding holder count suggests a network where stablecoins are increasingly functioning as payment settlement instruments rather than speculative holdings, and the velocity data makes one thing clear: the coins that are on Stellar are being put to work. Whether the supply contraction continues or reverses will likely depend on broader stablecoin issuance trends and the pace of new user adoption, but the current trajectory indicates that Stellar is carving out a distinct role in the crypto ecosystem as a high-velocity settlement layer for institutional and retail payments.
